I've not dealt with them but there are a few on *bay at the moment. I forget their asking price but the total with shipping would probably be about $12 or so.

    Cheers! Bill

The nylon knives are "okay" for cutting. But in all honesty, they're meant for stabbing attacks, and are generally advertised as self-defense weapons.

Just a warning lads, if this thread turns to weapons talk it will get yanked. Talking about alternatives to a sgian dubh or utility knives is off topic of the original post, but tolerable. Discussion about knives as weapons is not.

Back to the original subject - airport security...

I would highly recommend that people NOT carry even a plastic "alternative" sgian dubh through airport security unless you'd like to see the inside of a TSA interrogation room.

Plastic *can* show up on the X-Ray machine. It just won't set off the metal detectors.

I agree. To be honest I was a bit worried that my kiltpin would be confiscated. I had not thought about it, but it is metal, and it is sharply pointed.

If someone's bound and determined to get a "weapon" through airport security, they're going to do it.

I'm more worried about the disposition of the "confiscated" items - I'm thinking that a number of TSA personnel may be collecting things they find interesting in the name of "safety."

    You got lucky.

I find the idea that they'll confiscate items and then "auction" them to be reprehensible - some people get the opportunity to mail the item home. Others aren't so lucky.
