4 yard vs 8 yard - Part Two

I'm seriously considering making my X-Marks tartan a box-pleated kilt, as I haven't started pleating yet. I could easily make two (although I don't know what good that will do me, having two of the same tartan).

My 2 cents of advice: If you have enough XMarks tartan for a full "tank", do it. There are enough other tartans and plaids to mess around with box-pleats. I think I have a suitable piece of charcoal tweed arriving soon for another box-pleat.

We are very used to thinking of our pants as being sized by waist size. However, I am starting to come to the conclusion that honestly, we should start talking about kilts by the HIP MEASUREMENT, not the waist measurement. It's the hip measurement that defines how much material will be in the kilt, not the waist measurement. You taper the kilt from hip to waist, right...not "expand" the kilt from waist to hip.

Exactly, that is the important one anyway.

... And then, to cut the massive bulk of useless material in the small of Panche's back, they CUT IT OUT!!!! ....

I was never able to get my head around the idea of CUTTING good 16oz wool fabric up anyway. I even made myself a knife pleat kilt which took an unholy amount of fabric ( the exact amount isnt important) to cover my rump but I just set there for five minutes looking at the scissors in my hand and the fabric waiting to be cut.....I couldnt do it and finally decided to rip it out and make em into two box-pleated kilts. Personally I find the idea of doing this to good $65-80 wool a crime.

Six yard kilts, my friends....six yard kilts.
Or, like Matt says, four yard box kilts in heavy material....

Barb, thank you, thank you, thank you for that suggestion. You're a peach. I have been fretting over how to build my 16 oz Weathered MacLaren (for everyone other than Barb, it differs from the Weathered Ferguson only by replacing the white stripe with a yellow stripe) - too close in colors for another box-pleat, too heavy for a traditional sett-pleat.

That means in a year or so, I'll have a 13 oz MacLaren casual (done), a 16 oz Weathered Ferguson box-pleat (done), an 13 oz XMarks traditional sett-pleat (August), and a 16 oz Weathered MacLaren stripe-pleat (newly-listed) ...and just got some cotton Muir / (California) tartan from The Scottish Weaver.

Back on topic...I don't own a 4-5y kilt, so I better stay clear of the discussion.

All I know...I love deep pleats...and lots of them! 8 yards 13-16oz kilts are just fantastic!

Thanks Barb. Well, That just settled it. The weathered Ferguson does make for a great kilt. The decision is made. Get the weathered Ferguson to the stripe and the Ferguson modern to sett. No more buying anything else until that day even though this is going to take awhile. At least the tartan decision is made. Now to save up and find someone who would consider making the kilts. As Robin stated "I love deep pleats... and lots of them!"

way2fractious - thanks for posting the picture but for some reason its not coming up for me when I click on the link. Do you recall who made the tartan? An 8 1/2 inch set would provide for some deep pleats if I have been understanding the posts lately.

I thought about that, but my wife hates wearing tartan skirts, so that's out. I think you're right about making a full 8-yard knife pleated one, though. This is definitely a special tartan and I might as well go all out with it.
