I'm in Key West which is sub-tropical. I have a wool tartan kilt and a black utilikilt. Personally, I would not wear sandals or tennis shoes with a kilt, but thats just me. For casual wear I wear a pair of black Sketchers low rise boots or high black Timberland hiking boots with solid black athletic socks scrunched down (I picked those up at the NEX). For occasions that call for a polo shirt or a shirt and tie I will switch to the kilt hose in cream, lovat blue or black depending on the shirt color. For dress occasions kilt hose and ghillie brogues (sorry Hamish, I'm in the P1M camp on that!). I have found that my wool and poly/wool hose have not been a problem in the warm (hot) weather. Not to worry. You'll find what's right for you...oh..and a kilt flask! You can't go wrong there!

Morath,
Those Cole Haan's are some sweet sandals and I think they would go fine with your Blackwatch. I've seen a number of tartans worn with sandals and they generally look good!
And, welcome to the forum!

Flip flops are your friend. I wore them to the Highland games last year here in Calgary (and I wasnt the only one). The only reaction I got was envy from a few people who were wearing thick hose.
It was nice to be able to walk bare foot in the grass

I'm going to echo the sandal idea. Dark sandals tend to work just fine with a kilt.
For a shirt -- I find that my normal shirts are just slightly too baggy to be tucked into a kilt and look right. I go one size down if I know I'm going to wear the shirt with a kilt. (But people my age all seem to go through a baggy phase ... who knows.)

What I like about semi-dress and certain casual sandals is that the right pair can sort of resemble ghillie brogues without acutally being them.

Semper Fi Morath,
Its already over 100 up here in the canyonlands of Arizona. For work I like the SportKilt soccer sock like "kilt hose." with tennis shoes with the hose pushed down.
Any other time sandals, no hose.
Them SportKilt hose are cheap, like $6.00 and they seem to be some kind of cotton with elastic in them so they're not too hot.
They don't offer oatmeal, but the black or dark green might work. Easy wash and hang dry too.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll definetly look into those SportKilt soccer socks, but I think I'll spend the greatest amount of time in sandals. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a nice pair tomorrow out in town. Its nice to know I wasn't too off the mark in thinking about sandals and kilts.

The root word in "sandal" is "sand."
Here's a summer look on sandstone.

I think it works. That's a Pittsburgh Kilt Desert MARPAT for you historians.

Many thanks for posting those two brilliant photos, Scott. They are publicity shots for TFCK [top] and Geoffrey (Tailor) [bottom] and were taken in The Seychelles about four years ago. The white TFCK is in poly-wool and was made up by Howie immediately after he made my identical one.
The tartan is Geoffrey (Tailor)'s corporate 'Thistle Dubh'. I have the grey version of it. Nice!
