Sgian Dubh Question(s)

My sgian dubh cost about $110 Canadian. It isn't razor sharp by any means, but you can tell its intended to be sharp. It's made by Art Silver Pewter Ltd. I like it plenty.

I always keep my sgian pocaids(sp?) razor sharp-less likely to injure yourself that way.

BTW, I swear by the Lansky sharpening system.

Just throwing that out there for those that want a sharp blade without too much work. Even my brother mastered the Lansky system-he has 2 left hands!!

For quality, I'd say that of a Buck, Kershaw, Gerber, etc. knife. Just a good knife, nothing extremely fancy. I would say the quality of your cold steel, but I really don't like the non-traditional look. If they made that knife with a trad. handle, it'd be perfect.

As for price, preferably $50 price range but I guess up to $75 if I have to. Don't know alot about what they cost and who makes good ones.

As far as Rab's, I'd love to have one, and I'm sure they're the worth the money, but that's out of my price range.....maybe one day....

Tricky. I think your best bet is to lurk Ebay for a Mini-Culloden. The handle - though Kraton - has a semi-traditional style.
I think the alternative is to sharpen an existing blade (as has been suggested) or even building your own. I recall a couple of threads on the subject.

I am wondering if the larger knife companies have any knowledge of the current kilt boom? Would think they'd have plenty of sales if they addressed it with a quality product. They certainly make knives for plenty of niche markets...why not OUR niche market??

...Not all Sgian Dubh are blunt and useless as knives. I got one a couple of years back from a British sword supplier (if any one wants the website PM me) that has a folded steel blade (commonly called Damascus) which is superb. It takes a keen edge and is about the best quality I've ever seen on a Sgian Dubh... Jeff.

I know he has Demascus blades, and his work is very high quality.

As mentioned above, I'd almost bet that the angled blade is for comfort, due to the hilt being carved on both sides. The only reason I can think of for being flat edged is so that someone doesn't sue them for cutting themselves trying to remove it from the sheath or something equally daft! I'd guess that the caution label is simply a carry-over from before they changed their "sharp" policy, & it simply saves changing the boxes.
