12 years US Army infantry. From a LONG line of servicemen; my father, 4 uncles, both grandfathers (one a POW in germany, shot down in '42), both great grandfathers. My brother also currently serves, and retires in 2 years. Me, I got out due to differences of opinion between my higher ups & first line leadership. Namely, dont ask others to do what you cannot do yourself.

I'll hit 17 years in the Army in Oct. There's been a fair number of folks in the family that have served back to the Rev War.

Closed North Island Naval Air Station, San Diego, with a kite at the age of 5.

Tried NROTC for 5 years in college. Decided that the outdoor industry had more appeal. Great training, great bunch. Family paid my way, so the govt. wasn't in the lurch for my tuition.

40 year Navy brat. Father full bird. Grandfather flag rank. Long shadows abound. I'll probably be the least decorated Kinney, civilian or military, in 5 generations. Those who didn't go military became diplomats. <sigh> I hang out in a converted garage and slurp coffee.

Yes, I was conscripted into the Army (RASC) for two years National Service back in the early 1960s. I would never have chosen to go but, after the basic training period spent in the dreaded Aldershot area of Southern England, I had a whale of a time - as a Corporal on the Admin Staff at the Joint Services Staff College. This College was based on a large country mansion within private parkland of over 500 acres set deep within the English countryside. I wore an Army uniform only once, I think, after leaving Aldershot - navy blazer and grey flannel trousers being pretty much the daily norm! My abiding memory of that period, was the joy of instigating and running Scottish Country Dancing sessions for the students (Colonels, Captains, Group Captains and higher, and their wives) in the Officer's Mess !!

I do not recall ever having done weapons training, other than carrying a rifle during Parade Ground drill whilst at Aldershot. It really could be said that I held a civilian position for the greater part of those two years - and that suited me fine!
