Loud McLeod and Other Fashion Tartans

So I have a bit of a dilemma... I really like several tartans that have now become "fashion tartans". Black Stewart, Thomson Camel, and Loud McLeod are chief among them.

What do you guys think about wearing these particular tartans? Those of you that do, do you get any weirder or more asinine comments than when you normally go out kilted?

I guess the issue is that I don't mind some idiot calling it a skirt, or trying to call my masculinity into check... but I really don't want something that looks like I might have swiped it from my wife's closet!

Myself, I believe a kilt is recognisable as a kilt every time, especially in a tartan of any colour (derogatory remarks from cretins notwithstanding). So my opinion? If you like it, wear it. It's never going to look like it belongs to your wife

My Loud Mcleod kilt gets more comments than any other kilt in my modest collection. It is not for those who do not like attention. It is bright and bold. However It is no more feminine (or masculine) than any other tartan.

Wear the tartan that appeals to you.

    Cheers

I've never thought of the MacLeod of Lewis/Dress (Loud MacLeod) as a fashion tartan. Although, occasionally the fashion industry seems to discover this tartan.
    MacLeod of Lewis Taran

The MacLeod of Harris/Hunting is probably a way more popular tartan. Much easier to find shirts, boxers, etc.. in this tartan.
    MacLeod of Harris/Hunting Tartan

However, both are commonly seen as school tartans....

    I'll echo Panache's comments...

Most of us who wear kilts like attention (or at least "deal with it") b/c the garment ITSELF gets a lot of attention.

For those of us who like LOTS of attention above and beyond the fact you're wearing a kilt, the Loud MacLeod fits the bill.

Ron MacDonald has several dozen kilts INCLUDING a Loud MacLeod. I hope he weighs in on this issue...

Attention is like coffee, there is no such thing as too much!

I have seen many women's accessories in Loud McLeod... my wife and mom both own scarves and/or gloves and/or winter hats with it on them... and they're the last people on earth to know anything about tartans. My wife even owned a skirt in it once. I'm guessing it may be more or less popular in different parts of the country/world...

Thanks for the responses guys. I figured I'd end up owning them regardless, but wanted others reactions (and also stories of non-kilties reactions) on some of the more-often commandeered tartans.

    moved thread...

Since this thread is about tartans, I'm moving to the heraldry & tartans section. Please post all tartan-related threads here.

    Thanks,
