    Another Sgian Don't

Well, a short time ago I received some lovely Banksia and Alpine Blackwood in the post as a wee gift from Raptor. (Absolutely gorgeous wood to work with, btw.)
And I've started work on my Sgian don't.

I got some cheap bottle openers but they were slightly curved.
So I clamped one and began grinding and reshaping it.

Once that was done I shortened it to allow for a snug fit without having to drill most of the way through the wood.

And I fitted it into the Alpine Blackwood to make sure I was happy with it.

And I done the whole thing, as usual, kilted.
It's just a better way to do your D.I.Y.

Hopefully in the next few days I'll decide what I want to use as caps and begin shaping and carving the wood.

Good one Arlen. Knowing what the grain is like, I'm hanging to see it finished. Love the sporran, BTW!

    I quite like it.
believe me, I am seriously considering getting a leatherworking kit and trying to make a sporran from the tool pouch material.
I think that would be pretty great.
And it would go so well with the denim kilt I ordered from Unionkilts...

The grain on this wood is incredible.
I shaped the handle today and I'm going to start carving it tomorrow.
    It is so incredibly smooth.
    Thanks again!

Interested in seeing how it carves. I haven't had a great deal of success with most of our hardwoods that I've tried

    Thank you.
Hopefully it turns out as sharp as some of yours have.

    Well, it's done.
Alpine Blackwood capped with charred Oak, varnished and set with a steel design to match one of the kilt pins I made out of a spoon.

Here it was before I sanded and varnished it.

And this is it all finished.

The grain was so close and smooth that I decided just to varnish it to protect it and leave it without carving.
I really like it and I'm hoping to wear it soon.

Another big thanks to Raptor for the wood.
