I was USN from Feb 1983 to Feb 1990. I was on the recommissioning crew for the USS Iowa (BB-61), the USS Edward McDonnell (FF-1043), and ended up my navy stint on the commissioning crew of the USS Leyte Gulf (CG-55). The funny thing is, I was born on the 20th anniversary of the ending of the battle of Leyte Gulf.

I would be interested as well, I would be honoring my father who was a Navy Seebee during World War Two, he was stationed in the Aleutin Islands during the war.

It's the same kind of nickname for a sailor that "jarhead" is for a Marine, or "grunt" for a soldier. (I can't think of one for the Air Force... someone want to share?) It ain't kind from a stranger, but we'll take it from each other.

It refers to the fact that a sailor on the beach has "more hands than an octopus."

Anyway, we still need at least 13, so if you know a kiltie who has some interest, poke 'em.

Of course I'm in! USA is my vote, but SW is a fine 2nd choice.

If anyone is worried, if they are "allowed" to wear it, please do, with pride.

I got a further email from Jerry at Stillwater. He says that the Edzell tartan is copyrighted by Strathmore, and that his suppliers only work with cloth they've woven themselves, which is how he keeps his prices so low. So it looks like our choice is USA, presuming Strathmore even weaves PV... or will allow someone else to.

In any case, we need at least another dozen people before we approach Rocky about it.

I just checked as well and yes, Strathmore has proprietary rights to it. I can PROBABLY get permission (for a fee), but as Mr. MacDougall said... I'll need 20 orders to commit to do it. The cost of material and "permission fee" is a pretty big "barrier to entry" for less than 20 orders (learned my lesson with the US Army tartan... hahaha).

Keep me informed on if the number gets up toward 20!

I've heard "airedale" used before. My father-in-law is a retired USAF LtC, I'll ask him...

I frankly prefer the U.S. Navy Polaris tartan, which is currently in use by the Naval Academy Pipe and Drum Band. Would there be a similar price barrier to using that one?

    Best regards,

    Jake
