Well for a first kilt in Black Watch might I suggest the Heavyweight Black Watch from Stillwater kilts Here is the link to it as this would be your first kilt I think this might be just the thing as you wont have to spend an arm and a leg yet you will still have a wool kilt in the tartan of your choice, as well Jerry ships out very fast.

That does indeed look right up my alley! It even says "heavy" right there in the title. I don't like shirts, but I like a lot of fabric around my middle. And I don't want it blowing up on me either. I have bookmarked it but I will wait I think, to buy it a little later when I have listened and looked more, but thank you, that is a very good looking one.
As a PS to my first post: P.S. About price, money isn't really an option, you know, as long as it isn't a million dollars! I have a job, and I've been looking about for a while, so I will be saving up for it. I will put out whatever money I need for a good piece of clothing that will serve me for a long time and make me happy.

The Stillwaters are a great value. I like mine because they have the look and feel of a much more expensive kilt, but I don't have to worry about pub spills or sitting in the dirt at a concert etc... I'd start with a Stillwater, if a 24" length would work for you and also order a custom made in another tartan. You can research a little and find a regional, military service or just one you like. One kilt is never enough.
Footwear is one of the most individual differences you will find here. People wear everything from nothing at all to sandals, Chucks, hiking boots, jump boots. You get the idea. O'Neille

What are your measurements?
Waist, hips?
How tall are you.
there may be a kilt already available for you in Blackwatch.
But for a first Kilt I think a Stillwater is the best bet!

I am 5'9"
If I have measured correctly I am a 30" waist, and a 34" hip.

Welcome from California!!!
As you will undoubtedly be shelling out a large amount of cash for a traditional kilt, my only advice is to take your time---keep asking questions here, as far as a sporran being an inconvenience--I would be interested in knowing what your friend carries things around in??? as a traditional kilt will have no pockets....
Good luck with your research, it's alot of fun searching and you will find more choices than you might have originally thought!!

That won't help much. I have a 44" waist SWK standard that I had wanted to trade. But in your case, you would have to cut too much off tho make it fit.
Well it was an idea.

I was wondering did you measure your "true waist"? The True Waist is where a traditional kilt will sit, and it is higher than where your pants would sit, it's best to measure around where your bellybutton is, it is also best to have someone help out as looking down will pull the tape. If you look around on some of the kilt makers sights there are measuring directions out there. I also noticed that you did not include your drop measurement, if you are going to have a kilt made for you the kilt maker will need that measurement as well.
Do you have a tartan shop near you? If you do it might be worth your time to see what they can do for you.
