I find it interesting that these are real WWI photos, and the kilts seem to all be at the top of the knee near as I can see, some a wee bit longer even....

Great photos, thanks for the attribution and information as well !

First of all, I love the pics!

There's something really special about seeing photos of some of the last guys ever to go into combat while kilted.

One thing I find interesting is that a lot of those guys have those little sticks with them.
They seem too short and thin to be used as canes......what are they?
Wear your kilt proudly, but carry a big stick

It's called a swagger stick. It is a symbol of authority that is till part of a formal uniform. I think it is still used in the UK and other nations. Cavalry officers would carry a riding crop instead.

Wearing the kilt above the knee is the traditional wear to wear it. And the kilts worn in WWI would've reached to your ribs. Recently, kilts have been worn more like pant, down at the waist (or even hips! ) and have ended at the knees, or in worse examples, even lower....

    these pics bring tae min'...

did ya ken that Scotland lost maire troops (per capita) in WWI than oiny country in the world...

Scotland paid a very heavy price fur that war....

    in fact...

The Scots were the tallest race in Europe, accordin' tae the 1909 Census.. the average wuz 6'0"...

But the carnage o' WWI changed that... By the 1930's, the average heicht o' men in Scotland had been reduced by 9 inches tae 5'3"...

note the guy on the left and the lengh of his kilt.
In some cases braces (Suspenders) were worn also.

Chef, thanks for the advice as you can see I got there !

    Regards
    Cef

I've experimented with wearing a kilt as high as my floating ribs, and it's incredibly uncomfortable. Of course, our ancestors don't seem to have been as concerned with comfort in their clothing as we are... witness Victorian era photographs of people wearing black wool suits in Southern Arizona....
