    Kilt pin project

I was at the local dollar store today at lunch when I found a single flask set. For a whole $7.99 I got a 5 ounce stainless steel whisky flask, and this...

It's a one ounce mini-flask. My intention is to find a way to turn it into a kilt pin. What do you think?

Yes - Yes - But remember, it must be quickly detachable!

    Great idea!

Only open in case of emergency! How big is it? I would think it should be heavy enough to keep the apron down.

The body is about 1-1/2 inches x 2 inches, and about 3/4 inches thick. I'll have to weigh it, but I'd guess it'll weigh 4 or 5 ounces full.

I say a leather or nylon flask holster with the pin built in. That way you can attach it as a pin, but then take the mini flask out for "emergencies"

Yup, a leather case with pin back sounds possible. If you make the case tight enough it might cause damage to your kilt while removing the flask from the case (horrors!) so if I were making it I'd probably stitch a small strap with a glove snap on the end to go over one side of the top of the flask---that way it is secrure but can be removed without stress to the fabric. I am actually in the process of carving a teeny cover with a saltire on it for a one-ouncer just like this.

BTW the flask itself I am using (after removing the excess key rings) weighs 1.2 ounces empty, 2.1 ounces full, and I estimate the total, once covered in leather, finished and stitched and filled, to be about 2.6 ounces.

    Like these:

I ordered this pack at a good price but subsequently found an amazing array of them at my local variety store. You can also salvage them from hard drives, etc. If you search you'll see several threads about them on the forum.

I already use them for some kilt pins. I don't think they'll work for this, though. What happens to the magnet when you remove the flask from your kilt apron (only in emergencies, of course)?

Just grab 'em and stick on the back of the flask. Only during an emergency, of course.
