I'd be careful about the fabric as well. A lot of LARP stuff is made of something other than what you'd want to wear as a practical coat.

Since you're only worried about that lovely California weather, how about looking into a piper's raincoat:

What you're thinking of is an Inverness coat; a long coat, somewhat like a trench coat with no sleeves and a long cape which fully covers your arms. Imminently practical; I love mine.

That is much more of a cloak; essentially a big circle of fabric; sometimes with buttons, usually with a clasp or loop-and-toggle at the throat only...what I'd call a boat cloak.

Thats a great cloak for a live action role playing game. However, I'm with the others, it is a costume and there is no way to wear it without it seeming like one.

There was a thread about Inverness capes and apparently there are some band ones out there that are lightweight, rain proof, and neatly fold up into a small bundle when not in use. Hamish owns one it has to be worthwhile.

As a Poor, Starving Liberal Arts Student, I should have checked other places to see if there was something of comparable or betted quality for a similar or lower price. Somehow, I missed Mr. Antony's. I shall get the $55 one after I get some more money in.

Don't be embarrassed as a student you should know it is better to ask and learn than to stay quiet and ignorant.

Not rainproof, but I just picked up a tweed trenchcoat-style overcoat at Target for $19.88 on clearance. It will fit over my kilt jackets and the tweed certainly echoes the feeling of a true tweed Inverness cloak. (Actually they are worth checking out because they have a lot of blazers and sportcoats for under $25. Great material for a kilt jacket conversion, not to mention tartan paterned cufflinks for $5)
