Thanks, I'm impressed with it. It's not perfect, but it turned out better than I thought it would.

Looks great! Good job, mate, you can be proud of that kilt!
One suggestion....pull the front up a bit so that the over-apron doesn't hang down lower than the rest of the kilt. But that's a "wearing" suggestion, not a construction suggestion.
SWEET...and
YOU MADE IT.........How cool is THAT?

It's very cool, and I even impressed the wife in the process.
Now I get to make #2 for my brother in the same fabric.

I flaunted my newly minted kilt Saturday nite at a St Paddies party, and received a lot of compliments. A few people asked where I bought it from and they were surprised when I informed them that I made it.
That makes the long nites hunched over the sewing machine less painful, and ready to start on kilt #2 for my brother.

That's something to be real proud of, no matter what it is or the quality (I think yours looks real good) it's special because it's made by YOU.

Hey Jake, that does look good! You'll be amazed at how much quicker your next one comes together. After two more, yoiu'll be cranking them out in a couple of evenings.
I can't tell if you've used a waist band or not, but a waist band with a lighter 100% cotton lining attached is well worth the extra time investment. Alan's instructions have an appendix on waistbands I believe. I can't remember if he tells you how to attach the liner...
Consider this progression as you gain speed and confidence:
kilt #2 -- add waistband and cotton lining
kilt #3 -- add waistband and lining, and make the apron twice as wide
kilt #4 -- add both of the above, and switch over to knife pleats (you can use much lighter weight material on this one)
Now you're ready to tackle tartan fabric and produce your first semi-trad kilt.

What you want is Alan's very fine X-Kilt Manual!

How is this different from other kilts? The X-Kilt is made from a solid color or something somewhat randomly patterned (like camo). This means that the sewer does not have to bother matching up a tartan pattern in the pleats for example. Most kilts are knife pleated. The X-Kilt is box pleated.

Thanks for the compliments.
TartanHiker, I have a waistband on the one that I made, and I never thought of using a liner since the fabric is ripstop cotton.
I have pics of the kilt stomping about Asheville, and I'll post them up when I get a chance.
