I'm with Jock Sinclair: centered on the back. I've can't remember having seen it any other way.

I guess that I will be the odd man out on this one, but on my brown sporran belt the buckle falls just behind my right hip. It is very comfortable there and never posed a problem as to looking bad. On my black belt it has no buckle, there for a mute point and on my semi dress with a chain it does fall in the middle of my back.

I clicked "back" but in reality it doesn't make any difference.

Maybe i'm unique in that many times if wearing a strap instead of a chain with a sporran... I put the buckle centered underneath the sporan, so you dont see a buckle anywhere when you look at it, it's hidden.

I try to keep the buckle at the centre of the back.

In my very humble opinion, the only time the sporran buckle should be at the hip,....is when playing a sidedrum.

I voted on the side, but that doesn't really match how I wear my sporran belts.

The buckle for my sporran belts tend to be to the left side of my sporran. I do this as I tend to take off my sorran when I am inside the house, and put it on again as I go out. Placing the buckle on the side, makes it faster to put the sporran on, and I don't really worry about how it looks, but I don't think it looks bad.

I always wear a kilt belt, and after I am dressed for the day, the sporran belt is on there too. So, when I am inside, I would have a kilt belt on and an empty sporran belt.

I only vary from this with the dress chain belts that I use for evening attire. Then they buckle in the back, as that is the way that they are designed or made.
