I'm with James on this one. On my leather straps I arrange the buckle just to the side of the sporran so I can get them on and off easily. I made my own straps with a round section where the sporran goes, which allows the sporran to move more easily as I walk. The round section is just a few inches from the buckle.
My formal chain has the buckle in the back.

I usually wear center back, but James Mc and Tartan Hiker make great points about ease of use. Trying to feed the buckle through the belt loops and get it adjusted properly in the center of your back can be a challenge.

Now how do you know he's going to clobber anyone. Maybe he's just mad at the chair.

This reminds me of an Irish joke : Someone enters into an Irish pub and asks a bunch of guy sitting at a table: " Excuse me, can I use this chair ? "
He was immediately answered : "Why ? is there a fight ? "
