Where to get family tartan kilt for under $250?

I've seen a couple websites where this is possible in 5 yards of casual 10 oz fabric, but none of them can get it to me on time. I need the kilt a month from now. Can anyone recommend a website that can make the custom kilt quickly, even if I have to pay a rush order fee? Thanks so much.

In particular, we are looking for the MacMillan Hunting Modern tartan, if that helps.

I'm new to this site and to the kilt market in general so please excuse my ignorance!

USA Kilts have a Macmillan in their semi traditional range within your price. Depending on the hip size they are $220 - $250 plus a $35 rush fee. Call Rocky at 610.935.3444

I have had success with www.tartanweb.com and www.scottishkilt.net

They have some great prices on 5 yard kilt and should be able to make your deadline. Send them and email and explain the situation.

You can also try Rocky and Kelly at www.usakilts.com they may be able to get a 5 yard wool kilt done in that time

Thanks, I saw that too. It would work, but he actually wants the hunting modern tartan which USA Kilts doesn't have available.

Understand, though, that if the kiltmaker does not have that cloth on hand, they will not be able to do it, no matter how much they rush. You definitely need to call the different places and check.

    I'll offer some advice here.

My first kilt was a 5 yarder in lightweight wool and I bought it for my wedding. It looked fine in pictures. But, when you boil it down, the kilt is not very good at all. It's far too light, and the low yardage only increases this.

Were it me, and I were needing a GOOD kilt, in that tartan, for $250, I would contact USA Kilts. Their banner is in the top left of every page here. They don't have the hunting version of the MacMillan. BUT, they do have the MacMillan tartan. You could have one of their semi-tradtional kilts, in 11 oz. PV, for $220-250 (depening on the hip size.) They offer a rush order for an additional $35, and that gets your kilt out the door in two weeks.

In my opinion, this is your ONLY reasonable option given the budget and time frame. GOOD LUCK!

Rocky is still likely your best bet. If Lochcarron has the tartan woven, a kiltmaker may be able to get some in time to get the kilt made.

    Are you in the US?

I may get crucified for suggesting this but here goes anyway. Heritage of Scotland (yes the infamous Gold Bros) lists a current sale on their 5 yard Kilt by John Morrison at a US price of $167, and it is described as being hand made in Scotland. They have several fabric options listed as available in Macmillan Hunting Modern, although until you call you won't know if they have any of them in stock for a rush order. They list a 10 oz Batley with no fabric upcharge, a 10 oz Lochcarron for $109 fabric upcharge, a 13 oz Strathmore for $120 upcharge, and 13 and 16 oz Lochcarrons for $150 upcharges each. The Batley Macmillan hunting modern pictured on their website (tartan-fabric.co.uk/swatches.htm) looks the same as the other manufacturers, give or take a smidge for color variations between weavers. You will have to add additional charges for the rush job, priority shipping, and probably a heavy hit from customs, especialy if they ship via fedex. So I am not sure you will still come in under your $250 budget or not.

As others may tell you, Gold Bros products can be hit and miss for quality and service. I have thus far had good luck twice and so-so luck once in dealing with them. Caveat emptor.
