I've only worn them once, so there hasn't been the occasion to clean them. But, tinfoil coverings sounds like an excellent idea. They may ward off the Martians and I might get good radio reception, too.

I love spats. Will prolly pick up a pair before my best friend gets hitched, and use them for a couple of upcoming weddings and my company's (a bank) annual black tie Christmas dinner...

Please forgive a sillybilly from Germany!
What does "spat" mean? Never heard that expression before and I havenīt found it in any translation source yet. Could it be the same as "gaiters"? Iīm just curious.
    Thank you
    Cheers

It depends on how you define gaiters. My definition (and just one definition, not the only one, obviously) is the things that go around your ankles and buckle up. The RN and RCN used to wear them, and we called them gaitors. These are different from spats because they buckle and don't go over the shoe, but over the top of the boot. I'll try and find a picture of both.
