there are alternatives to hemming it. I won't get into all that again, but I'd never hem a kilt no matter how well the hem looks.

I'm interested in the alternatives to hems.

Hem? I'll probably get shot for this, but never hem a kilt. And if you but one that is hemmed, you're probably not buying much of a kilt.

I know, I know, some of the ladies here have hemmed kilts, but a kilt should be made with the selvege at the bottom, and there are alternatives to hemming it. I won't get into all that again, but I'd never hem a kilt no matter how well the hem looks.

Let's say that you had a chance at some fantastic Scottish woven tartan wool kilt fabric on e-bay, but the selvage was bad? (I'm told by some that this happens sometimes when the loom gets out of adjustment.)

Anyway, let's say that you found this great deal, and it had bad selvage...wouldn't it be better to contact your kiltmaker, and ask him or her if it was a problem? Then make a low bid, just to see if your scarpet was at great hight? (I always wanted to use that phrase!) And then go ahead and have a kilt made?

Well, I think you might jump at the chance.......I did!

I know Jerry chooses to use the term "heavyweight" and I know you're guessing the weight at about 13 ounces and I know there have been other threads about the true weight of the SWK 'heavyweight." If its been posted I've either missed it or forgotten it.

Does anyone know what the true/actual weight of the SWK "heavyweight" wool fabric is? Would be a lot easier to understand using the standard terms.

I'd be interested myself. Time to start jonesing for a Kathy Lare Kilt now. Got an email this morning informing me she had received my payment for a new handsewn 8 yard, 16 ounce Strome in Mackenzie ancient tartan. This will be the longest jones yet!

Last year I added two of the SWK heavyweights to my umm... substantial collection of kilts. The first, a solid green, I got to go with a green kilt jacket and waistcoat that I'd won on eBay. So impressed was I with its quality, that I turned around and ordered a black one, because everyone needs a little black kilt don't they? Both needed the "iron fix" and strangely, the green one is 25" long and the black is 23". That aside, I love these puppies! Only my custom made's rank above them in my kilt pantheon. They're cheap and classy, like me.

They're no longer described as being of "merino" wool on the SWK website. Perhaps Jerry found a new fabric for these?

I e-mailed Jerry about this a few days ago. The Australian merino wool is no longer available. However, Jerry said that the Black Watch heavyweight is still 16 oz. wool. As I recall, all of the other SWK heavyweights, that is, other than the Black Watch, are 13 oz. I'm going to order the Black Watch heavyweight soon so that I have another wool kilt for cool/cold weather.

And, as those of us that have purchased SWK's before already know, as soon as you complete your order online, you go to your front door and the packaged kilt is on your doorstep.

A smidge too long...but not as long as i thought. Are you sure it's 24" Jerry?

I remember a post of F-H.C.A.G hemming up Panache's SWK Hvy Shadow. My Standard Nightstalker also seems a tad bit longer than my other Kilts from SWK. Still, what's an inch compared to all the other nice things about the kilt?

The bottom edge looks good but has a weird defect (?) There are holes, that appear to be from a needle, and precise enough i would say made with a machine. You cant see em unless you hold it up to the light, but it looks like maybe the bottom was hemmed, then the stitches were removed leaving the needle holes. They are aprox 1/2 inch from the bottom edge and run all the way around. They don't detract from the kilt in any way, i just thought they were odd and wondered why they were there.

I used to work--a long time ago--in a weaving mill. Those holes are from the pin rolls that hold the material taut in the loom.

Good. Thought it was just me. Anyone have pictures of this sporran?

I was happy with my SWK Standard, and when I buy another kilt, I'm looking at the SWK Heavyweight. As has been said many times... I just wish there were more tartans available. It's rare that Jerry has the Leatherneck in size that will fit me.
