Shirt/hose colour
So far, I've closely matched the colour of my hose and shirt. Is this necessary? What are the guides for matching colours?

I usually match my hose and flashes to the colors in the tartan itself. The shirts I usually wear with a kilt are always a nice, neutral color that goes with anything.

I tend to match my hose and shirt/sweater/what have you; it just looks best to me. Of course I tend to choose colors that are predominant in the tartan (green, blue) or one that goes well with anything (i.e. black).
As for guidelines for matching, heck it's Scottish dress - who said anything about matching?

I sometimes do this, but usually I match the hose to one of the predominant colors in the tartan, with the flashes matching one of the stripes. I pick a shirt complementary to the tartan, which may match the hose or not.

This matching up business is a fairly modern phenomenon, by which I mean the last 20 years or so.. Whilst matching your shirt with hose, for example, is a nice idea , but I would not get too worried about it.

The main thing I think about is not putting plain brown with regular gray or black; (not talking about red-ish brown, brown/gray, chestnut, charcoal brown, or any of those colors). I know which colors look best or at least alright on me, so sticking to that, it all works out.
You can't always find hose in the color you would like, so go with what you can get and don't worry about it.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Matching hose and shirt is one way to go. You can coordinate them with one of the colors in the tartan that you're wearing, or you can make them both a stand alone accent color, but matching.
Another thing that I've done is to match both the shirt and the hose to the tartan, but not the same color. This is best done if you're wearing a waistcoat, preferably not a PC-style one at that.
My tartan is all blue, green, purple, and white. However, I've had very successful outfits put together with matching my hose to the kilt and wearing a red shirt. A color that doesn't even register on my tartan's radar. The shirt is mostly covered up with a waistcoat and argyle, and the tie also accented a tartan color. It worked, so don't think that you're confined to the colors of your sett.

Today I am wearing a USAK casual in American Heritage tartan with a red shirt and something like postal blue hose, matching the colors in the tartan but not each other.

Rex.
