I've never even considered double breasted waistcoats... Are these ever worn with kilts?

Sure, if you like. I usually see them for evening dress with the kilt.

I tend to do up the top five buttons of my waistcoat; so if it's a six button waistcoat the bottom is usually undone. If it's a five button waistcoat they are all buttoned. Evening waistcoats are always fully buttoned.

That said, I think it rather silly to worry about buttoning one's waistcoat... trousers are another matter.

For either Saxon or highland attire I wear my waist coats with all the buttons buttoned if they are designed to be buttoned.

On some waist coats the last button is slightly offset and if buttoned the waistcoat doesn't lay right. If this is the case I leave it unbuttoned.

I'm working on one right now, though it'll have to wait until I finish my Ike jacket. I'll try it on with the kilt when it's done.

I'll have to try to figure out how those work. It might be that I need to try to find one to look at, and that might be difficult.

By the way, it was beaten into me that the bottom button of the five or six button waistcoat should be unbuttoned right along with "brown belts are to be worn with brown shoes," and "black belts are to be worn with black shoes," so I can't help it. However, I will give buttoning it a try with a kilt one of these days... I think.

I leave the bottom button undone, unless it is a Prince Charlie waistcoat. As mentioned before, it was Edward VII who left his button undone, due to his rather large girth.
