Question What kind of kilt, newbie needs advice!

Last year I spent the money to buy a Utilikilt Workman's. Like the idiot they said I was being, I bought it too small and hoped I would fit into it. I won't, likely ever.

I am a teacher and on the weekends and in the summer a "roadie" or stagehand. I want the toughness of a Utilikilt, but the comfort of shorts. I would also like to wear the kilt doing manly things like mowing the lawn, visiting my local hardware store and even going out for a brew with my lass.

I am a big fella (48-50" waist) and don't want to look oafish. Any advice as to what i should buy? $300 for a kilt is out of my budget. Thanks for considering my request for advice.

Boys, boys! Dress for the body you have, not the body you hope to have.

    Or think you have.

    Welcome, though,

For 300 bucks, you can get two Stillwaters (in wool) or three of their synthetic kilts. I'd use wool for wearing, but I would guess that the PVs might be good for roadie work. You know, you can wash the PVs.

Call Kelly or Rocky at USA kilts.

Take the measurements proper..... you're not fooling anyone. Kelly wont laugh when you give the numbers.... get one that fits.

They can hook you up.... no doubt. I've heard nothing but good reviews about them so I ordered one without hesitation.

Sell the one you dont fit into and use that cash as well.

Hello and a warm Celtic from Boston, Massachusetts.
    Cliff,

Before you have another closet space filler, you may want to read a thread in the "Kilt Advise" forum on Kilt waist VS jeans waist. I haven't the skill to figure out how to put a link here for it, sorry. A fair warning is that every kiltmaker/vendor measures things differently. If you are interested in a Freedom Kilt by Steve Ashton, you will need to use his measuring guide and follow it accurately. Best to be measured by another person. Steve's system only works for Freedom Kilts, and will not work if you are getting a Semi-trad from Rocky at USA Kilts. Rocky uses a different system to make the kilt fit the man.

You indicate that you are a Gentleman of Substance. There are many on this forum, and you will have great company here. I am sure some of them can post here to help you choose the way to a comfortable and good looking kilt choice.

Many of us are educators, some are full time, and others of us are volunteer. I teach Sunday School to kindergartners kilted.
    Enjoy the summer gigs.
    Welcome to ye rabble.

Hello and welcome from Savannah, GA. I second those suggesting a USA Casual, (or Semi-trad if you can spring for the extra bucks). The Casual will be easy on your wallet, but still made to measure and they're made in a high quality PV that will stand up to your work and are washable to boot.

Welcome! I would echo what others have said, USA Kilts semi trad for non-working stuff and then the Stillwater Standard model for the heavy stuff. Utilikilt from what I have heard is really good, but I have no experience with them. $300 can go quite a ways in the kilting world (contrary to popular belief.)

It has been said that the kilt is the most flattering of the male attire for the bigger gentleman, so don't worry about your size.

Welcome from the Western Slope! I'm an English teacher at Basalt High School, CO. Also a Gentleman of Substance, so we have a lot in common. Look about this site and check out the threads talking about measurements. Then star doing some shopping around for the right kilt for you. A lot of merchants have already been mentioned and all are great.
I get to wear a kilt on Fridays to school for "Dress Down Day" and the students love it. I call it Cultural Diversity day. Anyways welcome.

A shot of me in the classroom.
