They don't bite, but they fly into your eyes, up your nose, into your ears, and generally make it impossible to think, let alone work. The other night, a bunch of Icelanders were playing an informal pick-up game of soccer at the place we were staying, and they were all wearing midge nets!
We have a lot of midges here in Norway to. I don't know if there is something special with Norwegian midges, but they bit. They are some blood thirsty devils.

If you want to see Icelandic landscape, rent the movie "Beowulf & Grendel". It has the Scottish guy from 300 in it as Beowulf. Even though none of the story takes place in Iceland, it was filmed there a few years ago. Movie itself was not very good, but the photography was great.
