Kilts in Oregon

I am so very proud to live in a state where wearing a kilt is so acceptable. There are those who are a bit behind on there history, however, I chalk it up to them being viscious no matter the situation. I was working the state fair in Salem, OR. and was surprised that not only were the people impressed by the kilt, there were some who recognized the MacDonald tartan. "Wow!" So, a big Slainte to my fellow northwesterners. How is it where you are?

It's all about location. I live in Reedsport and to say the least, the kilt is only tolerated on certain occasions. I haven't met open harassement and only very little acceptance.

The trick is keep on trying.

I live in the NW and there is no place where a kilt is not acceptable. Actually it's getting kind of dull. It use to be people said something about a kilt, but now it happens only every once in a while. Is this really progress?

I live in Southeast Washington and have only had the Hispanics make off handed comments about it. On the other hand the Chicks dig it and know exactly what it is when they see me, even in an X-kilt.

It is accepted in Bend, Oregon very well.

Tolerance is a grand thing. That is why we should be more tolerant of those who refuse to wear a kilt and pity them their denying themselves the joy of it.

I suppose that I'm in the Mountain West, rather than the Northwest, but I wore my newly finished RK X-Kilt (pics and info to be posted in the DIY forum soon!) as an exhibitor at the farmers' market today and then to our evening movie in the park. I didn't receive a single negative comment. One lady at the market said, "Nice skirt." but I think she just didn't know to call it a kilt. My wife immediately corrected her and I explained that kilts can be tartan, tweed, or solid colors. Our favorite baker in town loved it and wants me to convince her husband to wear a kilt.

I had a few looks up and down and some turned heads, but I'd say that Missoula is a very kilt-friendly town.

Mostly I get positive reactions and respectful questions. Even the occasional "S word" is usually an honest mistake. As far as whispers or negative comments, I've gotten to the point where unless someone gets in my face about it I don't really notice. Most people aren't willing to try to get in my face. Lately though I've had a lot of female Diana Gabaldon fans who want to talk to me and find out if I've read her books and "did I know that her next one is coming out soon?". I think Gabaldon may have done a lot to make we kilted folk into "romantic figures" instead of "wierdos".
