What to wear to dinner?

Morning all,

Got some plans for New Year's Eve. Talked my wife into us flying over to New Orleans for a long weekend. Dinner will be at Emeril's Delmonico. Recommendation is business casual "plus".

I was thinking that would mean 6 or 7 on our Ten scale but I don't have a jacket yet out side of a PC. I think that would be a bit of an over kill.

Any recommendations?

Depending on the weather, would a pullover sweater over a shirt and tie work? That seems "business casual" to me, but I ain't the one makin' the rules.

A sweater in New Orleans? Seems a bit warm to me. Business casual plus = shirt & tie. I think you'll be fine without a jacket or a pullover. (not you couldn't wear one if you like)

After 6PM dinner jackets are always appropriate. Wear the PC with white dress shirt and black bow tie. The suggested dress code (Business Casual Plus) is the current code for "Jacket and tie required", and is there to discourage folks from showing up in tee shirts and shorts. You'll look sharp, and will definitely be the best dressed man at your table.

I have the same question. I am going to a New Year's Eve Ball and the invitation states "attire: best dress or suit". I'm thinking that a PC would be too much. Any suggestions.

A fair question-- a better way of phrasing the suggestion "best dress or suit" would have been, "black tie or suit"-- wear the PC.

A lot depends on your age and glamour factor. If you are frequently mistaken for Brad Pitt, you can go ahead and wear the PC, only do it in the casual-formal way, with a dark shirt and a 4-in-hand tie, preferably with a high stance vest.

If you are like the rest of us, but you still want to do something special, why not get a moleskin jacket and do a quick and dirty chop off. Don't mess around with fancy cuffs or buttons, just have someone remove the extra length. Moleskin is durable, but versatile. Later on, you may want to add silver buttons and make it your transitional dress jacket, but it will work nicely as it is in N.O.

Thanks for the info. I can picture the PC with a bow tie. Unfortunately I still have the pre-done tie & cream hose so I will still have the same problems as the Navy Ball about the dreaded WHITE HOSE!!!!!!

When I was at the Ball since I wore the vest I just wore a plain belt. Since it will be seen do I go with a plain belt & buckle (my standard jean belt) or with the black dress & larger buckle?

Well I wouldn't want to be mistaken for Brad (even though that happens all the time) Remember he does live there.

I wish I had the time to do the jacket mod but (I know it's sounds whinny) I am leaving for Navy duty in Coronado tomorrow through Sunday than to the in-laws for a week the following weekend through Sunday and than that Thursday out to New Orleans. Six flights in three weeks.

By the way, I would assume in this case it would be better to error on the side of discretion and pass on the sgian dubh?
