I have Two dusters that I use, brown and black. I generally use them when it's raining hard. Otherwise I use whatever I feel like.

I think one has two options - either a coat that is cut to the waist (like a bomber jacket) or a coat cut very long (from an an inch or two below the kilt to almost floor length). Anything in between looks odd imho. I have a heavy leather bomber jacket (black) that I wear with my Utilikilts and other contemporary cut kilts as they tend to ride just above the hips. I wear a very long leather coat ( almost floorlenght) for my dressier kilts as I am usually wearing them out to a show or other event and that means wearing a kilt jacket and vest.

I have a charcoal wool melton surplus German Army jacket which is hip length. Got it from Sportsman's Guide several years ago.

I think it looks good with the kilt, but I'm not very tall, and think full length coats don't look right on me.

I like the puppy... In a year or so... A great hunting dog to make the rounds with you.

I'm with Matt on wearing whatever keeps you warm, however, I recently picked up a charcoal herringbone overcoat at the local thrift store. (Its amazing the quality of clothing you find in Thrifts lately.) I haven't worn it with the kilt yet but had that in mind when I bought it. I'm just a little ways north of you so I understand what you are saying about dressing for the weather.
My usual dress with the kilt is more business casual so I most likely will wear a gray herringbone kilt jacket that I modified. The overcoat should cover the jacket nicely and comes down about mid-thigh. I will try to post pics when I return home from the holidays at the in-laws.

I'm pretty happy with my black peacoat! Keeps me warm and doesn't look bad with my kilt. I'm tall enough to keep most of the length of the coat higher than the sporran...

I agree, I was in a pinch the other day and I wore my dark grey pea coat and it looked great. It was for a wedding in Darien Ga, where the first Highlanders settled (I believe). It was held in an old Scottish mansion. Pretty cool.
