For some reason I see this discussion ending badly.

It could. All conversations could end badly. However, this is not the place to argue about who is the best kilt maker. It is just a list of some of the more popular kilt makers and their prices compared to others. What you personally do with this is your decision.

Wally provides no details whatsoever as to his pricing on his website......I daresay that has a lot to do with why he wasn't included.

That is correct. I can only include companies that have FULL pricing listed. That is why Freedom Kilts was not ranked.

For an 8 yard, Knife Pleated, Machine sewn Kilt.
Includes full stabilizers and interfacings and full liner if requested.

I charge a flat rate labor fee. The only difference in price is due to cost of different fabrics.

up to $671.40cdn or $643.97usd also at today's exchange rate.

For 2 Side Slash Pockets and an Under-Apron Pocket add $60.00cdn.

I offer this in the interests of fairness... The prices you derived are from the various websites (I believe) but some kiltmakers have different sales and offer member discounts. As an example, I have my first wool kilt on order from one of the craftsmen you listed here when they offered a sale in March and that price varies from the web listed price. Further too that, the kilt maker provided very good customer service and assistance with placing the order. For an investment like a good wool kilt that is no small insignificant issue.

I guess, I would use list pricing as a generic guide. With this first wool kilt (and I hope with additional ones in the future) it is not the same as, for example, getting a 72" HD TV at Best Buy versus Frye's Electronics. With a kilt it is much more visceral, it is not a commodity. It is an individually created, custom work. I daresay that different than something mechanically produced it is a labor of love to create in many instances.

Money will always be an issue with me, as things like paying the mortgage, providing for my wife etc will always take precedence, but that said saving $20 is not going to make me jump.

You are correct. Since each company has their own discounts/sales, I decided just to compare base prices (to make things a little easier on me). As I said at the beginning, customer service and other factors will affect each price in each individuals mind. That is something each person can take into account when looking at the list.

That is what I was going for. Just a basic list with basic prices. Nothing more.

Well, how about that! A lot of work for sure - thanks for that effort.

For me, there is much more than "price" involved when I go kilt shopping. I seek "value."

I've also learned to deal direct with a kiltmaker rather than a middleman company that sends the order on to a, usually nameless, kiltmaker. Too many tales of woe from dealing with middlemen have made this board over the years - sadly often when a deadline for wedding is missed.

Ya pays your money and ya takes your chances - but ya chances be better dealing direct with the person doing the sewing. And, don't forget to check if they're a full time kiltmaker or a part-time kiltmaker. Full time kiltmaker gonna get your kilt to you sooner almost always.

The way I understand this thread, it is to compare the retail $ only.

Special offers, discounts, and deals done for friends and colleague shouldn't count on this list because they are not options available for everybody. The only way to be fair is to list the actual retail prices that they charge.

That's fine, and if my comments caused you offense my apologies, I was only offering an opinion. I was new to kilting not all that long ago, and if I read this message without a lot of knowledge I would have been bereft of what might be useful information. I was trying to contribute not detract.
