My kilted visit to the Finnish Northern Carelia

This summer's homeland trip took me and my better half to the hills of Northern Carelia (Pohjois-Karjala), the easternmost part of Finland. In the national park of Koli, we spent a couple of days, mostly wondering at the area's beautiful nature.

On a hike to the Ukko-Koli ("Old Man Koli") hills, I wore my Freedom Kilts Cargo Kilt, and would like to post a couple of pics of the trip.

The hiking trail we took, only 3,5 km in length as the bird flies, took us two hours of constant up and downhill climbing to complete. The difference of altitude between the lowest and the highest point was 122 m. Here, I'm looking down to a valley we just climbed up from.

Atop the Akka-Koli ("Old Woman Koli") peak, the lake Pielinen seems to stretch all the way to infinity.

This view puts me in mind of the music of Sibelius or other Finnish composers of the early 20th century: there is something very Finnish in it.

I agree. I can hear the Karelia Suite! Thanks for posting the beautiful pictures. Good choice of kilts, too!

Fantastic photos....and you are so right about Sibelius's music fitting that scenery!

    Thank you for sharing.

Now I have to find the music and give it a listen to this evening.
