The best fish and chips I can remember, is when as a youngster, you would get them wrapped in newspaper (illegal these days) and go down the beach and share them with the seagulls
Why is it illegal to wrap them in newspaper?

From memory it was a health issue,I think it was thought that something in the newsprint was not good for us. Fish and chips have never tasted the same since!

Nothing wrong with newspaper. For years they were wrapped in new white paper, with just a newspaper around that,...to keep 'em warm.
Just another case of professional meddlers!

Peas as well...peas always go well with fish 'n' chips, but the lashings of salt and vinegar are a Must!

I looked for recipes for roasting grouse, but people must think that they are OK unadorned just as they are, the instructions are, basically, clean the grouse, put it in a tin, roast it.

Jock Scot is right on the ball. In Australia it was deemed that the printers ink could affect your well being. There was a big who ha here about it in the late 70's and newspapers for fish and chip wrapping was banned by the various Departments of Health, around the country. One enterpising company stated to print one sided newspaper, but it never took off.

Ya, the cook book ad claimed it had a recipe for roast young grouse or something like that, but it only says in the introduction that grouse is eaten in Scotland with nothing else ever mentioned. There are all kinds of interesting recipes for breakfasts, sweets, meals, and side dishes, though.

There are a few restaurants here that have 'newsprint' printed waxed paper for fried things... It's not the same though, newsprint absorbed some of the overflow grease, this just funnels it into your lap.

Seems like those companies could be smart and just buy leftover partial rolls of newspaper. I've done that before when I needed packing paper as I was preparing to move my household. Go down to the newspaper office and ask for them, and they'll sell the rolls cheap. It's just blank paper - no news on it!
