Short
Like Tobus, I don't have a lot of length left to do anything other than have just the fringe, or perhaps a touch more, below the cuff. Even if I did I don't think I would wear them any differently. Having long tails flopping along sounds like more of an attention getter than I would want.
In regards to customizing the length, although I will defer to those who have actual experience, it may be easier to cut a piece out of the middle and sew them back together at the right length (never seen) then to mess with the fringe end. Just a thought.
Oh, and I would love to hear the controversy about the hunting socks Jock! We've about beaten the life out of the others you mentioned!!

There can be differences in length and top styles but other than that there is no difference that I'm aware of. I own quite a few pair of House of Cheviot shooting socks. They look and perform wonderfully as kilt hose.
I think the issue that Jock is alluding to is a debate about whether or not garters should be worn with shooting socks. Apparently we will have to send him a small gratuity for him to enlighten us though!!
COME ON JOCK !!!!!

So shooting socks with garter ties and kilt is OK, but shooting socks with garter ties while shooting is not?

Well, I don't want my practice to be considered as some sanctioned practice for anyone other than me. However, when I compare the two styles I can only find the slight differences that I noted before. And, you will find a lot more options when searching online for shooting socks vs. kilt socks. I am assuming that's due to the relatively rare practice of kilt wearing in Europe compared with shooting.
I will leave it to "The Sage from the Highlands" to speak to the mysterious controversy.

Interesting question. I remember the recent thread about how much sgian dubh to show and have answered the question for myself recently. I was to a fund raiser which was held in a bar early in the night. When the fund raiser was over the bar continued a normal night, so ...
When I arrived My sgian was well visible.
As the fund raiser ended and I found myself in a bar, my sgian got pushed far down into my hose.
As I stayed longer still and the bar filled I removed the sgian from my hose and hid it under my arm.
Technically it wasn't illegal until I hid it, but it was surely against the rules of the bar from the start. They also let me enter without ID and I wonder how much the kilt had to do with that.
