Are blue tartans only for police?

I am trying to choose a tartan for my first kilt and had almost settled on the New York city tartan. When I showed it to a friend who is a drummer in a pipe band he said that blue tartan are reserved for police bands. But since there are so many blue tartans I have to wonder if this is a hard and fast rule. I don't want to commit a violation . Can anyone please give me guidan.ce?

I am sure you will notice that a lot of posters on here talk about the kilt police...trust me, no matter what you do someone, somewhere will go out of their way to tell you their opinion on the matter. Personally, it's your decision to make, your decision alone. Try to go with your conscience, that gut feeling. And then have fun! And always, always post pics on here no matter what you decide!

No,no ,no ,no ,no. Whilst a lot of police tartans contain blue and I think your national police tartan is mainly blue, there is no disqualification from you wearing a tartan containing blue/mainly blue. My clan and family tartans have a lot of blue in them, MacLaren/Paterson. Xmarks tartan is mainly blue. go with the tartan you feel means something to you and Happy Kilting

No. And because this forum won't allow a two-letter post, let me say it again. No.

If you look at the background of this site you will see a Tartan that is primarily blue.
This is the X Marks Tartan and is the official Tartan of this site. The world's first Internet Tartan.
If you like Blue Tartans and are a member of this site you are fully authorized to wear it.

    Don’t believe him.

One of my favorite tartans is Holyrood. Very blue. And I’m not a cop.

Since the New York state tartan is blue he is clearly wrong. When you wear your blue tartan kilt and are told again by your friend that you are doing it wrong, simply smile widely and say, "Okay, but don't tell Clan Ramsay, or Clan Thompson, or Clan MacKay, or Clan MacBeth, or Clan Anderson, or the great state of New York for that matter".
