    My wedding outfit advice

    Hi all,

I know I am going to get many different opinions and points of view and that is what I want. I have studied hard so far on what is seen as "standard" for different occasions. This extends beyond the kilt and includes suiting as well.

My wedding is in the afternoon with an evening reception. I was thinking of either wearing a brown semi-dress sporran with black oxfords or wear my grey seal skin dress sporran with patent oxfords.

I am leaning toward the later but feel that that might be a bit over the top for an afternoon wedding. Especially considering that it is a garden wedding.

I still haven't got my family kilt made so can't post pics of that but I do have this link to the Jacket I'll be ordering.

    All opinions welcome.

    Cheers

If you are going to be wearing a black jacket, I think your seal skin sporran would look better than your brown leather sporran. I'm not sure what your brown "semi-dress" sporran looks like, as I've seen that term used to describe a range of styles.

I agree with Matt. I would think a brown sporran with a black jacket would look odd. As far as your kilt what is the tartan your going with? The fact that it is your wedding the rule of it being better to be over dressed rather than under dressed is definitely appropriate here.

I agree with the above posters. It's your wedding, as the groom, it's much better to be a bit overdressed than to be a bit too casual. Err on the side of sharpness!

That being said, go with the seal skin sporran, black jacket, and make a decision about the shoes. More importantly, what hose are you going to wear?

I would give a pass to the patent leather shoes, and recommend that you wear the black oxfords, polished to a mirror shine.

Just to clarify the jacket is charcoal grey. The brown sporran has a White seal skin face with a leather flap with some tooling. It is an old one from the 70s.

In Australia it is more common to wear a suit to a wedding. It is a more recent trend to wear black tie whenever. That is part of my concern. I don't really want it to look too tuxedo-like

Hose are important. I was tossing up between a pair of bottle green hose or my ancient Scott argyll top hose from dunadd trading.

Thanks all for your imput so far.

    Lang may yer lum reek

The kilt jacket and waistcoat are fine. I'd strongly suggest you wear a white shirt (most definitely not a wing collar shirt) and an ordinary neck tie, not a ruche tie as illustrated in the photo. For an afternoon wedding (in a garden) you would be better off with well-polished black oxfords-- patent leather shoes are strictly for "indoor" wear. Either tartan (or argyle) or solid coloured hose are appropriate for an event that begins in the afternoon and continues on into the evening. As Matt has stated (above) go with your seal skin sporran.

    And congratulations on your wedding.

Another *** for the oxfords and seal-skin sporran. Considering that the jacket you've chosen is more 'angular' (for lack of a better term) than a traditional Argyll jacket, I think those would be a better match to the style.

Great so my nice oxfords with seal skin. I might go with my argyll topped hose and the seal skin.

MoR, I can say with absolute confidence that I would not wear either a wing collar shirt or ruche tie. Wing collars are only really ever good with a White bow tie it at the very least a non adjustable black bow tie. Also ruche ties, feel don't match the nice lines of the outfit and scream "look at me" which stops the eye from reaching its final destination, my handsome face.

Sorry, I really need to stop ranting.

Once all pieces of the puzzle are bought I shall post a picture to see about any final tweaks that need done.

    Thank you all.

Oh about the tie I was thinking of a silver tie with a simple pattern. I am worried it would fade too far into the background.

    Cheers

I am with you on the rouche tie and winged collar shirt! I too considered these options for my wedding. Maybe a tie with similar color/s to you tartan would look nice?

    Good luck!
