"kilt-like garment" seemed more polite than cheap kilt....but cheap kilt works for me too.
Seems unreasonable to expect a good fit from a cheap kilt never sized for the kiltie.

I appreciate everyones input and because of it I'm determined to get myself a proper kilt that's sized correctly.

... or just possibly it's an expensive kilt that was made for a smaller kiltie!

Sharkman, wear it in good health, and don't be in too big a hurry to replace it. Measure twice, cut once, as it were.

Ouch!
You're right though. "Guessed" that since his other kilt was a Stillwater Thrifty he was navigating in inexpensive waters.

I recognize a gig line as a Naval term describing an imaginary line straight down from one's chin. The working uniform belt buckle's side must line up perfectly with it, so I'm a little confused by that term as used with a kilt, regardless, I too suffer from purchasing my first tartan without having an experienced kilt-wearer with me, so the right side of the apron doesn't match up exactly with the pleats {sigh}. Live & learn. No worries, the general public doesn't notice as all they see is a guy in a kilt, and honestly, I think you'd have to be standing perfectly still for it to be noticable. You may be able to move the apron closer to the pleats by experimenting with different positions of your straps.

The apron is usually centered on a stripe in the tartan. Lining up that stripe is analogous to the fly of my troosers. Here are two MacGregor setts, one has a narrow apron centered on the broad red stripe, the other centered on the more intuitive white stripe.
