JSFMACLJR, can you tell me where you found this picture? It looks fairly recent and the plaid looks pretty new.
I am curious honestly about the purling, there are clearly way more threads in each purl than I expected. Thanks.
/highjack.
Some very pretty brooches in here. Appreciate the ideas.

This looks to my eye as a brooch for feminine wear, not for male Highland dress.

It's a brooch.... it isn't for any gender.
It's for anyone who chooses it, it looks very nice, whomsoever who wear it it would only complement their outit.
Whether the brooch is round, oval or square they are all suitable to wearing with a kilt.
Your choice might not be to wear it, but you can't say that it's not for "male Highland dress"

I can accept your opinion.
On the other hand, I felt that a full-sized plaid brooch was too large for the specific look I wanted for my son's wedding.
They can look fine on many people in different ensembles, especially in piper's full-dress, where a large brooch balances the rest of the regalia.
I chose this brooch for the look I'm wanting to present, and also partly to comfort myself for the loss of one I really liked.

The OP has already seen this one, but here's a public link to a rather unusual one I've had for about 10 years. Lives at my girlfriend's place right now, and I wish I'd thought to tell her NOT to polish it before taking the pic as it had a nice antique-looking patina. Three inches across, heavy sterling silver in a "domed hexagon" shape, with a carnelian stone:

The photo I posted was cropped from one of Charles McKerrell of Hillhouse. The brooch belonged to his father, and perhaps even to his grandfather. The photo of Hillhouse was taken at the Gathering in Edinburgh.
I'm afraid I cannot tell you anything about the plaid Hillhouse is wearing. The purling looks "normal" to me, but then I am not an expert on that sort of thing.

There are TONS of them on ebay, I've been looking for quite some time for different brooches to use instead of corsages at my wedding. I'm making brooch bouquets, so having flowers for corsages didn't seem to fit.

Here is one that is similar to the one posted earlier in this thread. Search for "plaid brooch" on ebay, some of them are stunning.
