Need help / advise / info please

I saw an ad on Craigslist offering "kilts" for $10.00 along with other "antique clothing". I sent a message to the seller asking for more detail and pictures. The seller lives in Denver (about 2 hours drive for me). I don't want to drive up just to say "no thanks" to some nasty moth eaten woman's skirts. But, I don't want to let done vintage wool kilts for $10 get away.

I got an email and pics. Here is his description:

"2 skirts are plaid with pleats in them.

1) brown "Laird Portch of Scotland" on the tag. US size 8. It had a black belt that is somewhat adjustable. 2 straps.

2) black, red, and green. "Moffat Woollens" on tag US size 10. Also has black belt that is adjustable. 2 straps

3) matching jacket and skirt. Brown speckled fabric (maybe gaberdene). "Moriarty Textiles" on tag. US Size 12 has belt only, no straps. zipper in back of skirt."

Ok, so the third one is obviously a woman's skirt and I have no interest in that. The other 2 appear to be kilts. I see a kilt pin in each. I'm a bit thrown off by the "size" on the tag. I don't know why a man's kilt would have a woman's size tag.

The pics look like these garments have a narrow waist and are a bit longer than knee length based on the ratio of waist to length (know what I mean?)

Are these kilts? Is $10 the steal of the century? Or.... is this just some old wool plaid skirts?

Also, I have no idea what size 8 & 10 translate to. I have a 41" kilt waist and a 24 1/2" length. Would these even come close to fitting?

They look like kilted skirts to me. Normally the apron on a man's kilt would cross to the right; these cross to the left. They also look rather long to be kilts.

They are all ladies skirts. The size is one give-away. And the apron opens on the other side for a mans kilt. They also look long in relation to the waist. Is it a good deal for 3 skirts? Probably so if you know someone who would wear them.

Yup, agree with Lyle1. Disproportinately long to be man-kilts, and front apron closes on the left of the wearer, and labeld with women's dress sizes, those pretty much have to be skirts for ladies.

the 2 tartan ones are kilted skirts, not kilts. Still a very good deal for the right lady!

size 8 is a 28" waist and 10 is 30".........

An 8-10 women's size would be for about a 140-150 lb woman. Probably a 30-32ish natural waist.

This is that one time when someone says "Nice skirt" and you shouldn't be offended!

The middle one is "Gordon Red" tartan I believe and, depending on the yardage, may be able to be rebuilt into a casual kilt perhaps? Not a kilt maker so don't hold me to it, but at least it's a known tartan.

Pretty much what everyone has said (size being "12" and apron coming over the opposite side from right to left instead of left to right)...

I would also add, that you can tell they are skirts and not kilts by the way they have been displayed -- men are generally not that curvy, and these have been cut and tailored with a woman's hips in mind. The second thing is, if you look at the straps, they are far too narrow. Every kilt I've ever seen has relatively wide leather straps, not thin, little ribbons like these seem to have. Finally, the front apron is actually very narrow when you look at it -- on many/most kilts, the top apron would start near your left hip bone and come all the way across your front and to the right hip bone, so essentially (distance wise) from under my left armpit to under my right armpit. These top aprons look like they might extend only to cover the tops of the legs.

There have been a couple of threads here before regarding converting skirts into kilts, and these pix are actually excellent in showing how and why it would be very difficult and probably not worth the time/effort.

I pretty much knew these were ladies skirts. I was just hoping someone could convince me otherwise and I could pick up some sweet kitts at a cheap price.

I sent a message to the seller saying. "no thanks"
