I would never laugh at any of the suggestions you make.

If anyone knows anything about kilt and accessories it would be the likes of you and Robbie who have had years of experience.
So - I intend to use a strap instead of a chain for casual wear. Question - where do I get one from? I've trawled the net and made a few phone calls but can't find one. Will I have to improvise or do you know some secret place where they are sold. Do tell before my kilt ends up shredded!!

Any kiltmaker/Highland Dress supplier/sporran maker will have them Al. Where'ere you see a sporran for sale, there also shall ye find the sporran straps! In fact, I do not believe I was ever offered a 'chain strap' with any of the sporrans I have - except the Dress one, of course.
Be aware, in case you are making the purchase by Mail Order, that you need the strap to be longer than you waist belt, because of the angle with which it hangs.
Another point, try to get the strap in the same leather, certainly the same colour leather, as your existing sporran.
