I vote go ahead and do it!
I have a Kentucky KM-150 Standard that my folks got me for Christmas 5 or 6 years back, and I just love the thing. They're small and light for portability, they sound sweet, they'll change the way you play and think about music, and as a bonus, once you get good at playing them, you have a leg up on learning the fiddle, because they're tuned the same.
