Thank you for posting the photos but mostly thank you for posting the speech. I'm a native Texan with German heritage that goes back to settlers who came from Germany in the 1800's. For me Texas history was the history we learned in 3rd grade in San Antonio. Of course now days there is the revisionist version of Texas history hitting the schools but Ill stay out of that bee hive. What I knew and learned of Texas history is likely what most people had, a few names at the Alamo and San Jacinto, oil, cattle, Mexican and Indians. Very sparse indeed. This speech alone makes me proud of the people who served at the Alamo. Rarely do we get a glimpse into the real lives behind the names in Texas history, or the history of any state for that matter. Little did I know, until my historian cousin told me, that we had a family member serve in one of 2 Union battalions in Confederate Texas. He was pretty proud of that knowledge as he and even I should be. The contribution to Central Texas by the Free Thinkers from German are many and I only learned about them by hearing my cousin speak. This spurs me to look deeper not only into my own family but also the many families that make Texas what it was when it was settled. Juan Seguin has a small town named after him due to his many contributions to Texas Independence and early government. Now reading this speech gives me even greater insight into the many influences that created the Lone Star State. Im Texas German and dont claim in any way to be Scottish but I wear kilts because Ive always admired them. I dont try to dress Scottish or act that way, I just try to do justice to a from of attire that I enjoy. Reading this speech makes me even prouder when I don my kilt in a proper manner, Im not a sport kilt wearer except the Elkommando for hiking. When I wear my German Heritage tartan Tank (Bonnie Greene made), Ill wear it with new awareness to not only my heritage but the heritage of those who stood beside each other with the dream of an independent Texas. I tip my dram of Edradour to those who are Scottish Texans and the many contributions that Texas received from ya'll.
