Graham, If you mean that wearing a kilt to work may be challenging because your job might come into risk... then I would say that for some jobs, that may be the case.
However, if you are talking about being embarassed with people's reactions to the kilt I would say that your work environment should be one of the least troublesome. As you said, these are the people you work with day to day. People you know, who know you. In the work environment you can explain why you are wearing the kilt to anyone who doesn't understand.
If there are adverse reactions in different cities and villages, yes, you can just brush them off. On the other hand, you can't stop and explain the kilt quite as easily.
Personally I don't find any situation challenging in a kilt. I firmly believe the old saying quoted in So You're Going to Wear the Kilt I have quoted it before and I will quote it again. "If you can imagine any circumstances in which you would be embarassed to wear the kilt, then you should not wear the kilt under any circumstances."
