"Just a reminder that the Celtic peoples were characterised as "braccati" contrary to the views of David Stuart and Walter Scott! "
    Cranky,
My allusion was to ideas put about at the time of Proscription to the effect that the kilt went right back to the European Celts and therefore should not be banned. Thus, there was a pipe march composed in 1770 entitled "The Garb of Old Gaul" which came to be used in many regiments. Col. David Stuart of Garth wrote a sort of history of the Highlands in which he asserted the "antiquity" of the kilt and he and his crony (Sir) Walter Scott eventually got such nonsense ideas accepted for a century or so.
Scott didn't write about anything as far back as 3rd century. Some of David Stuart's correspondence is quite fun to read.

From about 1815 onwards and, of course, especially around 1822.
