What about an all herringbone or goose-eye twill fabric?
They would be structurally more sound than cloth with a mix of weaves but they would still be less effective for producing a hard wearing cloth with a good 'handle' than a 2/2 twill. That's why twill was favoured for tartan, denim etc.
