I have a pair of natural wool-colored....meaning "cream" hand-knit hose that I carefully store away and get out only for very nice occasions. They were hand-made for me by a lovely lass who used to post rather frequently on this forum. She's a fantastic knitter and a beautiful and articulate and educated lady. They're made from virgin wool, and are warm and generally wonderful. Also, unlike nearly every other pair of hose I've ever owned (until I got this Oh-my-God COTTON pair recently) they actually fit my leg and don't cut into my calves like a garrotte.
I wear her HORRID INAPPROPRIATE "cream hose" with pride and gratitude, remembering the lovely woman who knit them for me, and should someone have the absolute gall to present me with a card that said "any color but white" I'd be quite pleased to roll said card up and shove it where it belongs.
As for ignoring the ignorant masses, and "doing it right" while the rest of us wallow in ignorant boorishness, as indicated by the horrible and repulsive wearing of white...or even black SOCKS, I'll happily inform anyone who cares to know, that I would a hundred times over rather have a beer with a lad who's wearing white socks, but who's a sincere fellow, not too worried about how much better he is than everyone else, than choke down a pint with a person who thinks that the color of flippin' SOCKS that he has chosen makes him "more correct" and "better" than anyone else.
I trust that I've been clear, here.
