My wedding ring slips off rather easily, not that it does any good. I wear the imprint as a permanent brand. 
Regarding the OP's original question, IMHO it has nothing to do with TCHD per se. It has everything to do with an individual's confidence. Scotty Thompson said that if there are circumstances where you would not wear the kilt, then you should not wear the kilt under any circumstances. I am not entirely sure that I agree completely with that statement. However, perhaps the same principle applies to an earring?
