I think the "blessing" you are referring to is based on a joke about the two Jewish ladies talking about a restaurant. The one says "The food there is terrible!" The other says, "Yes, and such small portions!" Interpretation: Life is miserable, and so short. (courtesy of Woody Allen in Annie Hall). So Dr. Spock's blessing is the exact opposite of short and miserable; "Live long and Prosper"
What do I know, my family's not Jewish anymore, now that my Grandmother destroyed all the pictures of her relatives in yarmulkas (skull-caps), and tells all her bridge friends that we're German. Go figure.
