I don't think it's jealousy or that he doesn't have the stones. Most comments like this come from a place of "assumed superiority". He ASSUMES that he knows more about tartans (even though the actual facts he does know may only fill the bottom of a glass) and therefore wants to feel superior to you by telling you what he "knows to be true" (which is actually false). He falls in line with the type of people who put others down to lift themselves up type mentality.
Crash: Smile to yourself now and know that he's dead wrong. You are wearing a "real tartan" and you met a "real idiot" who didn't know "real facts".
