Great rendition of a great song.
The following is a fantastic rendition of a great song that was written by Cape Breton's own Alasdair MacGillivary.
Alasdair wrote for Anne Murray, Ryan's Fancy and had a distinguished career in his own right.
This rendition is being performed by Laurel Martell, among others. I was in youth choir with Laurel and, although she was a very good singer then, her voice has matured beautifully.
The subject matter is a common Scottish theme of missing home. In this case moving from Cape Breton Island to a big city (like Toronto) and missing the fishing boats and Gaelic sense of humour of home. The "Winston Scotty" records referred to in the song are a reference to one of Cape Breton's finest fiddlers in the mid 20th Century, Winston "Scotty" Fitzgerald.
Enjoy!
