Kilted On Campus
I wore my kilt yesterday to school, and forgot that I was supposed to man the Visual Media Guild's booth at the Student Activitites Fair. I've worn my kilt to school plenty of times, but I've never gotten as many comments as I did yesterday.
First, I had two girls come up to me with embarassed looks on their faces. They told me that they really liked the kilt, and then one of the girls blushed and asked if I knew what "regimental" meant. I told her I did, but that no, I wasn't. She instantly said, "Yeah, there are 20 mph winds today, so that could be embarassing."
Then, some guy came up to me with that look on his face like he really wants to say something. I thought for sure he was going to make a comment about the kilt, when he tells me that I have a cool Kangol hat on! I don't think he even noticed I was wearing a kilt!
Later at the booth, some guy came up and started talking to me about clans and stuff like that. He told me he was from clan Kerr, and couldn't afford a kilt. He then proceeded to take his shirt off and show me his huge Kerr coat of arms tattoo across his back. He then got all embarassed because there were about a 100 people staring at him, and he left before I could tell him about cheaper kilts. I'll have to try to find him later on campus.
Finally, I met a friend of a friend that made my day with his comment. He said, "It's good to see a guy wearing a real kilt for once. I keep seeing these guys wearing their girlfriend's pleated skirt and thinking they're wearing a kilt. They look so stupid, but your kilt looks great!"
Our booth ended up being really popular, but I'm not sure if it was because of the kilt, or because we had s number of framed cels that were used in the Simpsons shows. Our advisor used to be an animator for the show. Either way, we got people interested.
So, a pretty good day overall.
