Impromptu Promotion
Here are a few photos of an impromptu US Army promotion that we held at our house a few weeks ago. In the Army if you are lucky you may get 3 or 4 promotions in your career, more if you are very lucky and the Army allows promotions and reenlistments to be a personal thing. A major being promoted to Lt. Colonel was denied the private use of a meeting room. Traditionally the Officer pays for a reception at a bar, this officer is going through a divorce with a man that left her bankrupt and all she has goes to fight for custody. She was embarrassed that she could not afford a reception, so a few of her closest friends wanted to hold it in the office building on base- a civilian filed a complaint that she was not invited ( had never met). This is an Army building on a Army post, my wife found out and called me. I told her to have them come to our house. 10 minutes later the Command Sergeant Major arrived to set up the Flag. About 12 people came, they posted the orders, Chaplain said a prayer, and then they all had refreshments. We live on post in the old WW1 Generals quarters, so the civilian had no say in who we invited. I was already in my kilt when this happened and she really is 6'2".
