My 'secret weapon' when making kilts is the military style webbing I put into the waistband.
When the front of the waistband has been sewn on I fold the back of it over the webbing and turn it down. I ease in an inch or so of the kilt's waistline so that there is less strain on it, as that reduces wear.
The webbing resists twisting and sagging even though I do not put in the reinforcements beneath the fell which a more tailored kilt would have.
Note how Barb T. is a dyed in the wool kiltmaker - the correct element of the tartan is centred.
