I've just joined and this is my first post! You may already have replies to this question, but I haven't been all the way through this thread yet, and I'm afraid I'll lose my place if I don't just answer now...
I think your pin is the top of St Giles in Edinburgh, perhaps with the very top part of the spire broken off. It's the wrong shape for the Wallace Monument, but has the little "bumps" that the top of St Giles has.
It could be another cathedral of course, but looks very much like St Giles.
I'm in the US now, but lived in and around Edinburgh for 10 years, before returning 4 years ago...
