cross-cultural kilting
The Algoa Caledonian Pipe Band appeared on the front page of The Herald on 25 September, the day after South Africa’s Heritage Day holiday. The picture shows a band member checking the material of the kilt worn by Zamuxolo Mgoduka, a gqirha or traditional healer.
Note that the gqirha wears Royal Stewart, whereas the band looks a great deal classier (or at least not fashion-bound) by wearing the Black MacPherson tartan.
But oh no! they’re wearing white hose!
